David's Island, 1998

I originally visited David's Island in 1983 and returned this fall. I was amazed at how nature had reclaimed the island, where Fort Slocum was located. The roads circling the island were now invisible under brush. Many of the brick buildings had collapsed. The baseball field, which in 1983 looked as if it hadn't been mowed all summer was now an unrecognizable field of sticker bushes.
