Brother Island, 1975
Not far from the prison on Rikers Island, North Brother Island was the site of the hospital where Typhoid Mary was quarantined. As I was walking across the dock holding the front end of the row boat all of a sudden I broke through the beams and was holding onto the front of the boat with my feet dangling about 15 feet above the pilings. Then the first building we entered this NY beaver-sized rat ran in front of us. The strangest thing I saw was in several of the hospital rooms were Picasso-like paintings on the walls.
