Today things started to feel more normal. The streets were open to traffic below 14th Street and above Canal. The noise returned. The subways were running again, although more like there were 20 water main breaks all over the city. In the past just one would've been a big news story. There were more cars on the streets, but I still can't believe anyone would drive into the city instead of taking a train. I rode my bike to St. Vincent's Hospital and taped a copy of my photo "Dream City" to the wall. The candlelight vigil was just starting. |

It was quite moving to see this candle shrine in front of one of the many firehouses that lost firemen. From e-mail earlier in the day I heard learned the inevitable news that someone I knew had been at a conference at the top of the south tower and was missing. Other friends continued to call and write to see how I was doing. |

| This police car was covered with ashes down near canal. I heard there were many buried under the rubble. Overhead several times you could hear what must have been fighter jets. There's an aiorcraft carrier patroling off the coast of New York. I think back to the summer when I saw one steam out of port after visiting and people waving, not thinking that it would return to protect us. | ![]() |
| Down below Canal what few businesses were open were helping out any way they could. I saw a health salon offering free massages to workers. | ![]() |
| Most of the lights were off below Canal, but some of the office buildings must have their own power generators. This space was being renovated and I guess the painters must have left in a hurry after putting drop clothes over the escalators. | ![]() |
