The building that became Iglesia Evangélica Los Peregrinos reflects a pattern repeated throughout New York: as congregations shrank or moved away, churches and synagogues were sold to new religious communities, sometimes more than once, before eventually being abandoned. The changing congregations preserved the buildings while also recording the changing populations of the neighborhoods around them.

I heard about the church because of its beautiful ceiling with round skylights and went to photograph it. Then I realized it was only four blocks from where I had lived in the Bronx until I was eight, when my family moved to New Jersey. I had come to photograph an abandoned church and unexpectedly found myself back in my own childhood neighborhood.
