For generations of people driving through northern New Jersey, the Nabisco plant in Fair Lawn announced itself before you saw it: you could smell the cookies baking from the highway. After the factory closed, demolition began but was halted partway through, leaving portions of the enormous industrial complex standing behind security fences. The plant has since been demolished.

The Nabisco plant was next to the Kodak facility where I used to bring Kodachrome film to be developed and pick it up the next day—long before one-hour photo labs. Kodak eventually stopped making and processing Kodachrome, a process that involved environmentally damaging chemicals, and the plant closed. Nabisco remained part of the landscape in a completely different way: I'd be driving nearby, suddenly smell cookies baking, and realize where I was. When I found the factory partially demolished and fenced off, I flew my drone around it and, very carefully, inside, where I could still see the enormous hoppers used in production.
