Westinghouse's Newark plant employed thousands of people and manufactured products during a period when Newark was a major industrial city. The factory was also connected to WJZ, an early radio station that broadcast the 1921 World Series. After manufacturing declined, the complex was abandoned and eventually demolished.

I became interested not simply in photographing the empty factory but in finding the people who had worked there. That became In Lieu of Flowers, an installation about the lives that had once filled a building that was about to disappear.
